In the News--Again! 1998

The longstanding management crisis at the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System has not gone unnoticed by the local press and the national community of librarians. Unfortunately, those who could do something about the library system's fundamental management problems continue to ignore those management problems month after month after month after month...

Armed with a petition signed by more than 200 Atlanta-Fulton Library employees unhappy with the library board of trustees, Fulton County Commissioner Bob Fulton introduced a resolution Wednesday that asked the trustees to resign.

Fulton's resolution, which failed, would have set in motion a plan to reduce the board from 17 members to seven, with each county commissioner appointing one member.

With one commissioner absent, Fulton was unable to break a 3-3 tie.

That allows the issue to come up again at the commissioner's next meeting in two weeks.

"We call upon the entire board of trustees to resign; and we ask that the legal authorities responsible for the trustees' appointment select a new board of trustees comprised of leaders and library patrons chosen from the business and neighborhood communities," part of the petition read.

The petition said library employees doubt that the current trustees can hire a well-qualified candidate to replace the library system's former director, Julie Hunter, who resigned May 28 after very public fights between her and the board.

Hunter accused trustees of micromanaging her to thepoint that she could not run the library system.

The commission did approve spending $175,000 on repairs for the central library downtown, if the money can be found in the budget.

Commissioner Emma Darnell, who also serves on the library board, said sections of the building have been roped off because of water leaks from the ceiling....
