Announcement of Szabo's Appointment as AFPL Next Library Director

INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM

To:         All Library Staff

From:     Thomas C. Andrews, County Manager

Date:      February 25, 2005

Subject: Appointment of Director of Atlanta-Fulton County Public Library System

I am pleased to share that I have appointed Mr. John F. Szabo as the Director of the Atlanta-Fulton County Library System. His appointment is effective on April 4, 2005.

Mr. Szabo is currently the Director of the Clearwater Public Library System in Clearwater, Florida. He has served in this capacity since 1999. His service in Clearwater has featured successes in establishing non-tax revenue streams for library operations and projects, and working with private sector and community organizations. He enjoys an excellent reputation with city and library officials in Clearwater and other parts of Florida as an effective leader and advocate for library services. Mr. Szabo was very instrumental in the development of the new Main Library in Clearwater. This library was built with private sector participation and is located in an attractive bay front area in downtown Clearwater.

During his tenure in Clearwater, Mr. Szabo has served as President of the Florida Library Association and Board President of the Tampa Bay Library Consortium. He also served on the State Library Advisory Council of Florida.

Prior to his appointment in Clearwater, Mr. Szabo was the Director of library systems in Palm Harbor, Florida and Robinson, Illinois.

Mr. Szabo has a B.A. Degree from the University of Alabama, and a Master of Information and Library Services (M.I.L.S.) Degree from the University of Michigan.

I look forward to having Mr. Szabo on the leadership team of Fulton County. I feel confident that he will work very well with the library staff.
