Fulton County Taxpayer Dollars Wasted in 2009

  • County's Bill for Incompetent Security Guards Goes Up Again   Posted August 17, 2009

According to an August 11th story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Fulton County, having already paid $620,888 toward the multi-million-dollar cost of defending the convicted murderer of four people (and the bringer of misery to dozens of lives) after he escaped from county custody, has been presented a bill for a further $747,924 in expenses connected with conducting the murder trial.

And is the calibre of security guards employed by Fulton County better than it was before the trial? You who work in any of the relatively few county libraries who are assigned one of these officers know the answer to that question.

  • Some Retired County Employees Drawing Pensions AND Salaries   Posted July 22, 2009

"Double-dipping" from the county treasury has been going on in Fulton County for years, an outrage that hasn't seemed to phase county commissioners until this month.

For example, just how long now has a highly-paid administrator in the county's personnel department been "advising" the county since his "retirement"? And how many others of his ilk are currently on the county's full-time and part-time rosters, even if they aren't paid as handsomely as this particular individual?

According to a story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the commissioners are still going to allow retirees to draw both a county salary and a county pension for as long as six months a year.

Actually, the resolution the Commissioners passed in July merely asks for a report on current practices, which have long included the six-months-of-double-dipping-is-OK proviso.

  • Cost of Killer Brian Nichols' Trial: Over $3,200,000
    Posted July 22, 2009

The money to pay for Nichols' trial was taken from both the county's and the state's treasuries. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has some of the recently-released details.

You would be profoundly mistaken to assume that the breathtaking price tag of the murderer's trial - or the murder of a library manager several years before Nichols' murderous rampage - resulted in the county's commissioners making arrangements for top-notch security guards at county facilities (or, at most libraries, any security guards at all).

  • Federal Fines So Far for Fulton County's Sewage Spills into Chattahoochee: $687,676   Posted March 24, 2009

The fines date back to a ten-year-old court order. And the problems are far from fixed, according to a story in today's Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Unfortunately, the county isn't obliged to publicize the portion of its budget devoted to paying various fines resulting from court orders and lawsuits.

  • Federal Judge Threatens Fulton County Commissioners with Fines and/or Imprisonment   Posted January 28, 2009

Instead of complying with earlier court orders, the commissioners recently cut the budget for the county's jail, making it even more likely that the county will be noncompliant with numerous court orders handed down over the past few years. Perhaps this latest development will get the commissioners' attention?

  • Fours Years and a One Federal Lawsuit Later, County Jail is Still a Mess   Posted January 13, 2009

And county commissioners wonder why everybody who can rid themselves of entanglements with Fulton County Government is trying to do that, having plenty of evidence that the county cannot, or will not, reform itself.

Yesterday, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published an update on one of several county departments in chronic disarray, the county-operated jail.
