From the September 22, 2004 meeting of the library system’s board of trustees [Minutes, pages 42-45]:
Acting Chair Karen Handel: …Our next item: [Trustee and Acting Vice-Chair] Roger [Rupnow]
had asked us to talk about whether or not we wanted to do some type of recognition of the former Board
of Trustees and I think that is great and I guess what I’d ask of this group is: Do we want that to be from
the Board of Trustees or is it more appropriate for it to come from their appointing authority and we can
do either one or both. And so I’m just looking for some guidance on how you would like to see that
happen.
Stephanie Moody: Out of curiosity, has there ever been a place in the Library where there were
small plaques that…listed Board members who had served on the Library Board?
Councilman Maddox: That would be huge. It will be the whole building.
Moody: So you mean something for them personally?
Handel: …I got the impression that Roger was wanting to know did we want to do
something…formal.
Maddox: …We took a vote some time ago that we would recognize former Board members
when they get off the Board, give them a plaque or certificate or something that would indicate their
time and service on the Board….The previous Board has already established that and I think that should
suffice….
Handel: …So: certificates of some sort. OK.
Maddox: We can just have something from the Library Board, from the Library itself.
Reverend Willie Bolden: You said recognition of former Board of Trustees [members]. How far
back are you going?
Handel: Oh, I think Roger meant the immediate previous one and then going forward.
Bolden: Right. It doesn’t say it here [on the agenda]. I just wondered---
Handel: That is my interpretation of what he was getting at.
Maddox: I’m sure that’s what he meant. I can assure you of that.
Handel: So will you take care of certificates for the immediate past ones?
Interim Library Director Anne Haimes: Yes.
Handel: Great. Super. OK….
